The downside of conscientiousness
However, like a double-edged sword, being conscientious has its drawbacks if you’re not good at monitoring yourself.
Conscientious individuals can burn themselves out slowly, bit by bit, by overworking and taking on more and more commitments – and that is their Achilles heel.
You’re saying ‘yes’ to an interview, you’re accepting that extra client, and on top of that, you’re working extra hours to complete other tasks.
Before you realize it, you might be successful but you’re not happy. Not loving life. Not feeling in alignment anymore with your purpose and want you love.
What can you do to avoid burnout?
As a conscientious person, you have a strong sense of duty. When you say that you will complete a specific task, you will follow through on your promise.
So, what is the right move to avoid burnout and overwork?
The first step is to create a gap. Pause. Wait. Don’t answer yet!
Second, talk to yourself. Ask, “Why am I doing this task?” and “ Is this task vital for my current situation?.” You have to be smart at sifting through your to-do lists and learn to say, “No, I’m sorry, but I’m not able to do that.” Good luck!
